Behaviorism is primarily centered around observable and measurable aspects of human behavior. Behaviorist learning theories emphasizes on the changes in behavior that result from stimulus-response associations made by the learner.
Accelerated Reader-AR
Accelerated Reader has a behavoiristic concept. With AR, students are required to read a book. Then they are tested on their comprehension level. At the end of the test, which is normally 5 to 10 questions, the computer gives the student a score report. If the student has missed a question the program allows the student to go back into the test to see what he or she has missed. From these test the students earn points. Once a child has reached their goal they are rewarded a prize. The goals and prizes are usually determined by the school or the librarian in the school.
This program software focuses on drill and practice. It also focuses on the mastery learner. The material is broken down into small instructional steps, and lends itself to increased difficulty. At the end of each drill the student’s results are posted. It also gives the students an option to review missed problems.
Cognitivism focuses on mental processes. In this learning theory thinking, memory, knowing, and problem solving need to be explored.
KWL charts
KWL charts allow student to activate their prior knowledge and apply it to a new situation. In generating these charts students have to first reflect upon what they already know. Then they have to discuss and decide on what they want to know. After instruction has taken place the students document what they have learned. Using KWL charts allows the students the freedom to learn what they are interested in.
Dump and clump allows students to “dump” their prior knowledge, and then clump it so that what they already know is organized. The organization of prior knowledge will then allow the students a stronger foundation to build upon. This strategy allows students to generate relationships among new information and knowledge already stored in their long-term memory.
Constructivism is a theory of learning that argues that people generate knowledge and meaning from their experiences.
Compass Learning
Compass Learning is a web based computer program that allows the opportunity for differentiated instruction. At my school the students are differentiated by the results of the MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) Test. The program allows students to work at their level on math and reading comprehension skills. Many of the simulations that students complete are related to real life situations.
A WebQuest is an inquiry-oriented lesson format in which most or all the information that learners work with comes from the web. They are created in a non-linear format. The goal is personal understanding based on interest. The teacher does not have an active role in the learning process. The student learns through web experiences.
