EDET 709 Mini-Redesign
Rationale and Justifications

By: Latisha Lowery

For this assignment, I decide to browse Pete’s PowerPoint Station (pppst.com) to find a PowerPoint to redesign. During my first year of teaching, many veteran teacher spoke very highly of this website because many of them were not familiar with technology. Pete’s PowerPoint Station was an easy way for them to integrate technology into lessons without doing the work. Whenever I would visit the site, I found so many things wrong with the PowerPoint that I decided to start creating my own.

The PowerPoint I chose was created for young children. The goal was to get the students to differentiate the season’s characteristics. The original PowerPoint did not have any consistency in the slide design. Their was also too many graphic distractions that were irrelevant to the content presented. The colors of the slides were also very overwhelming and busy.

For the redesign, I decided to take the same topic and apply the graphic design principles that I have learned in this class.

1.) The first thing that I decided to change is the layout/design of the PowerPoint. I decided to use repeating design aspects throughout the PowerPoint to build consistency. In doing so I reviewed the Principles of Layout and Design, C.R.A.P.

2.) I reduced the amount of irrelevant graphics. I only kept the graphics that added to the content taught.

3.) I include video to connect the visual and the auditory aspects of learning. The videos also added an aspect that could not have been added with just text and pictures.

4.) The next aspect I applied in redesigning the PowerPoint came from the Zen Principles. I wanted my PowerPoint to be uncluttered, because clutter is a huge distraction from the essential lesson to be learned.
